
In a recent article, the Financial Times describes how primary schools are at the centre of a pioneering response to malaria in Malawi. The LearnerTreatment Kit is a joint effort between Malawi’s Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, Science & Technology. The project is supported by Save the Children International and evaluated by GAHI-LSHTM and Malaria Alert Centre, University of Malawi. It aims to evaluate the effectiveness, feasibility and cost-effectiveness of school-based case management for basic illnesses and injuries in school-children. This includes the use of malaria rapid diagnostic tests and artemesinin combination therapy by trained school-teachers for the testing and treatment of uncomplicated malaria.
