20 August 2014

The 13th International Congress on Parasitology (ICOPA) took place in Mexico City from 10-15 August. The conference, which occurs every 4 years, brought together over 500 experts from 45 countries to discuss various parasitological topics including malaria, helminths, schistosomiasis, and other neglected tropical diseases.

Panels and plenary session discussions included:

  • New insights on mass treatment against geohelminths, chaired by Theresa Gyorkos
  • Towards sustainable control of soil-transmitted helminths, an Asian perspective, chaired by Archie Clements
  • Open access journals, chaired by Peter Hotez
  • Integrated control of schistosomiasis, chaired by David Rollinson
  • Geospatial health: predicting parasitic diseases, chaired by Marcel Tanner
  • Control of neglected parasitic diseases, chaired by Pablo Kuri

The conference also includes the award ceremony for the World Federation of Parasitologists' (WFP) Distinguished Parasitologist Award. WFP member societies can nominate individuals whose contributions to the discipline have been considerable in the field of scientific endeavour, in research, teaching and/or in the administration, support and promotion of parasitology. We are honoured that GAHI's Simon Brooker was a recipient of this award, and we thank the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene for nominating him.

Simon gave presentations entitled, Predicting the global distribution of multiple diseases, and, Mapping the control of NTDs: understanding the context.
