East and Southeast Asia

  • 27
Climatic conditions in East and Southeast Asia vary greatly, although historically much of the region had high prevalence of STH. Improvements in water and sanitation coupled with the implementation of large deworming campaigns have substantially reduced infection in some countries, although others remain at high risk

Within the region there are pockets of infection with the schistosomes S. japonicum (in China, Indonesia and the Phillipines) and S. mekongi (found in the Mekong delta in Cambodia and Laos). LF is also endemic in the region, and several countries have active LF elimination programmes.

Here we provide maps of all available STH survey data from published and unpublished sources. Much of this data is only reported at a district or provincial level. Work is ongoing to produce LF survey data and intervention coverage maps for the region.
