Middle East

Helminth distributions in many Middle Eastern countries are limited by hot, arid environments that prevent sustained transmission of infection. Suitable areas do still occur in selected areas, and high burdens of STH and schistosomiasis can still found in a number of vulnerable populations, e.g. urban slums, and regions, e.g. the Arabian Peninsula.

Remarkably few survey data exist for much of the region. Here we have collated all available STH survey data from published and unpublished sources. Much of this data is only reported at a district or provincial level, and so area-level averages are shown.
